Today, Keep Britain Working published their review into state of the UK's workforce. Reacting to the review, the LGA highlighted the importance of public health in a health workforce, and the crucial role of councils in delivering it.

At the 10-year milestone of children’s public health responsibilities moving to local authorities, the Local Government Association (LGA) is urging the Government to commit to public health in the Autumn Budget to meet the ambition of raising the ‘healthiest generation of children’, with strong leadership and sustained investment.

“The Tobacco and Vapes Bill progressing through Parliament, presents a unique opportunity to protect future generations from the harms of smoking.

“Effective integration across the NHS and local government is essential to deliver for communities. With major change in both sectors, we must commit to rewire together, not turn inward into silos.

A new survey of councils in England reveals that just two per cent believe the £842 million-a-year Crisis and Resilience Fund (CRF) will be sufficient to meet the local welfare needs of their residents to a great extent.

New figures show the number of investigations carried out by councils where a child is thought to be at risk of harm is on average over 600 every day, underlining the need for councils to be adequately funded in next month’s Autumn Budget.

"This roll out is a significant move that will improve access to emergency contraception, by providing quick, confidential, and free options for women.

This important report further shines a light on the extent of online abuse of elected politicians, and the impact this is having on our democratic processes.

Cllr Tom Hunt, Chair of the LGA’s Inclusive Growth Committee, said: “Everyone has the right to live in a safe, decent, warm, and affordable home, and health hazards should be investigated and fixed in a timely manner.

"Local councils are committed to delivering care and support to all those who have cause to draw on it but cannot do this alone.
