We’re delighted to announce that the LGA is part of a new Department for Education (DfE) project to design a Centre for Excellence in digital and data for children’s services. Working as part of a ‘D2I consortium’, the LGA will be leading on the research and contributing experience from our existing sector support programmes. The Centre of Excellence will be a major investment by DfE in the capability of local authorities to use data and digital in children’s services, and the D2I consortium will work together to design it with the sector. A pilot campaign will soon be delivered in the West Midlands to promote local government careers for young people during October and November, as part of the government-funded ‘Make a Difference, Work for Your Local Council’ national recruitment campaign.

Older industrial towns and cities in England could deliver £13 billion in untapped economic potential, if government provides the necessary support to unlock local economic opportunities and break down place-specific barriers to growth, according to Local Government Association analysis.

The gap between the amount of money councils are paying in housing benefit and the amount they are reimbursed from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) increased to £266 million, new analysis by the Local Government Association has found.

Responding to the Housing Ombudsman's Annual Complaints Review, Cllr Tom Hunt, Chair of the LGA’s Inclusive Growth Committee said: “Everyone deserves a safe and secure home to live in, and it is never acceptable if people find themselves in situations where they do not have access to it."
